In 1996, Sakshi undertook a Pan- India participatory research with Judges, women complainants of violence, women lawyers and court watch. What emerged through the study was clear evidence of judicial gender bias and a consensus need for leadership and equality education for judges. This formed the genesis of the Asia Pacific Advisory forum on judicial education on equality issues started by Sakshi’s founder, Naina Kapur under the aegis of Chief Justice Ahmadi. Sakshi became the coordinating agency for this network of five countries in the region; Bangladesh, Nepal, Srilanka, Pakistan and India.
A unique model for creative leadership and equality education, the success of the forum lies in the breakthrough partnership between judges and NGOs in the South Asian Region.
